It takes hard work and dedication to be a competitive swimmer. It takes even more to be a competitive swimmer with one arm and no legs.
Kayla Wheeler was born with only one limb. Her doctor suggested that she try swimming as a form of physical therapy.
Kayla has applied drive and determination to other areas of her life, as well. She is a top student who is considering the University of Washington and Yale. She plays baseball, bowls and skis.
What makes this story even more inspiring is that, in her situation, most of us would have been content with just trying to be as normal as possible. However, Kayla ignored the stigma that she should conform to everyone else’s idea of normal. Instead, she decided to set her own goals and achieve them in her own way.
Kayla’s mother shared, “We always told her there is nothing you can’t do, we just might have to figure out a different way for you to do it, and she has pushed the envelope.”
